The Arboretum and Public Garden team maintains all of the campus landscape. As part of our "Campus Recommissioning" effort to prepare for the return of students, faculty and staff to in-person instruction this fall, we are recruiting summer student employees to work throughout campus on landscape maintenance and improvements.
Job Description
Under the supervision of Arboretum and Public Garden staff, this position will work both in teams and independently to maintain new and existing landscapes and plantings in the core of campus and the Arboretum. Duties will include weeding, mulching, maintaining paths, irrigation, pruning, raking, sweeping, digging and other tasks as needed to maintain the campus landscape. Assist with the maintenance of plants, decomposed granite pathways, irrigation systems, outdoor furniture, general equipment, and signage. Monitor irrigation systems for plant health and water by hose if necessary. Use hand tools and operate power tools such as a string trimmer, mower, blower, and/or a small tractor. As a representative of the Arboretum and Public Garden team, this position also provides general assistance to visitors. May assist with coordination, organization, management and supervision of volunteer work crews.
Qualifications
Must be able to work up to 30 hours per week in summer. Coursework in horticulture, landscape architecture, and/or engineering is highly desirable. Must have experience with landscape maintenance and/or construction using hand and power tools. Experience excavating soil and trenching with hand tools (shovels, picks, etc.), operating tractors, landscape equipment, power tools, and hand tools, and working with irrigation systems preferable. Previous practical gardening, pruning, maintenance and landscape plant identification experience desirable. Must be able to repeatedly lift 40 pounds from ground to waist height. Must be able to perform all tasks in a safe manner and operate with care around valuable plant collections. Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions including summer heat. Must have a valid California (CA) Drivers License.
Salary: $14.25/hour
