This internship offers hands-on experience in the daily management of the Arboretum Teaching Nursery with a special focus on propagating and growing California natives and other low-water, climate-adapted, wildlife-supporting ornamental and edible plants.
Internship Details
- Full-year commitment
- Interns are expected to complete 3 hours of work per week
- This internship is completely outdoors (regardless of weather).
- During the Fall 2026 quarter, interns will meet for hands-on work on Fridays 8:30 am to 11:30 am. Timing for the Winter and Spring quarters will be decided later, taking interns' schedules into account.
- Participation in the following is mandatory:
- Fall Welcome on Tuesday, Sept. 22
- Two, three-hour shifts at the fall plant sales on Oct. 3, Oct. 31 or Nov. 14
About the Nursery Management and Plant Propagation internship
This internship offers hands-on experience in the daily management of the Arboretum Teaching Nursery. Interns learn the fundamentals of plant propagation, irrigation maintenance, phytosanitary best-practices, pruning techniques, garden design, weed and pest management, and tree production methods for a retail nursery. Interns will be exposed to a broad range of horticultural knowledge with a special focus on California natives and other drought tolerant, climate-adapted, wildlife-supporting ornamental and edible plants. Interns also assist with our Plant Sales and other Arboretum and Public Garden events, developing their public engagement and event management skills.
