When you shop at the Davis Food Co-Op in September you can support the Friends, too! The Davis Food Co-op has selected the Friends of the UC Davis Arboretum and Public Garden as the recipient of this month’s Round-Up at the Register fundraiser!
Fifty years ago the Friends of the UC Davis Arboretum and Public Garden helped save the Arboretum. For decades since then, they’ve supported our favorite local nature escape, its free family programs and the development of its student environmental leaders.
A 50-year-anniversary milestone, while significant in any circumstance, is especially momentous as the world begins to emerge from a pandemic that shined a spotlight on the importance of nearby nature and outdoor recreation as one of the only allowed respites from in-home isolation.
The Friends of the UC Davis Arboretum and Public Garden—our community support group celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2021—has been a tremendous partner in fostering the excellence of our gardens, programs, staff and students. Would you or someone you know be interested in doing more for the Friends?
On the south side of Lake Spafford, nestled among heritage trees and a sprawling California buckeye, sits a unique, multi-tiered deck constructed from redwood to honor the grove nearby. The open-air location, enjoyed by thousands every year, retains a history with an extended local family – the Unger-Yackzans.
The Friends of the UC Davis Arboretum and Public Garden is led by a volunteer Board of Directors. Board members play a key role in building relationships and engaging members of the regional community with the people, programs, and impact of the Arboretum and Public Garden.

You have walked in the Arboretum and shown it off to your out-of-town guests, but you may not know that those paths you walk and those plants you enjoy are taken care of by talented teams of trained community volunteers.
Our large base of loyal Friends members and the steady leadership of the Friends Board have been two reasons the Friends group has been so successful in providing critical financial and volunteer support. We are pleased to welcome one new member to the Friends Board, Griselda Castro!
Thanks to last week’s rain and the first-ever postponement of an Arboretum plant sale, customers at this Saturday’s sale will receive a literal raincheck – a $10-value coupon.
