Pinus remota
Papershell Pinyon, Remote Pinyon Pine

Pinus remota, papershell pinyon, is a small, slow-growing evergreen tree with a pyramidal form. It has blue-green needles and edible nuts. It is the most drought-resistant and heat-resistant species of pinyon.
Allergy health hazard.
Poor potential utility as an urban tree based on evaluation of 2 trees, severely unhealthy crown, 100% survival, very slow growth rate. No signs of pests or diseases found. Trees had low germination and very slow growth rates in the nursery.
We trialed fall sowing seed in hoop house exposed to cold temperatures, as well as 1 month cold refrigeration in plastic bag in moist peat then sowing in greenhouse. Neither treatment was successful. Both treatments began in October after cone was allowed to dehisce. We got poor to no germination with a 6 week cold stratification in refrigerator collected from a different specimen. We also trialed overnight soaking of seed previous to cold stratification which did not improve germination. Seedlings are very slow growing, and sensitive to poor water quality.
